The Planning and GIS Department prepares and maintains the Official Plan for the County of Haliburton, provides Consent, Subdivision/Condominium, and Municipal Official Plan and Official Plan Amendment approvals and prepares and maintains the Municipal and Community Web-enabled GIS services. The Department also works closely with local municipalities on common planning and GIS related matters as well as providing ongoing planning and GIS technical support to County Council and the other County departments. The County Land Division Committee is responsible for making decisions on Consent applications. County Council is the approval authority for Subdivision/Condominium applications and Municipal Official Plans and Official Plan amendments. The County Strategic Plan also falls under the mandate of the Planning Department. The Strategic Plan provides a strategy for the community development and identifies the priorities set for the County through public consultation. Source Protection Planning, required under the Clean Water Act, also affects aspects of planning in the County. Two source protection regions impact the County – the South Georgian Bay Lake Simcoe Source Protection Region and the Trent Conservation Coalition Source Protection Region.
