The County of Haliburton is rich with multi-use trails. Whether you're a hiker, biker, paddler or snowmobiler, there's something for everyone.

Hiking Haliburton

Did you know that Canada's Largest Hiking Festival happens each fall and winter in the Haliburton Highlands? It's free to participate and these guided hikes offer something for everyone.

Haliburton County Rail Trail The Rail Trail is maintained by the Public Works department. It is multi-use as outlined below:
  • April 1 – May 1 or when trail conditions permit: the trail is open for all non-motorized activities.
  • May 1 – November 30 or when trail conditions permit: the trail is open to all non-motorized activities and ATVs that have obtained a permit as outlined on the Haliburton County ATV Association website.
  • December 1 – March 31 or when trail conditions permit: the trail is open only to Snowmobiles that have obtained a permit as outlined on the Haliburton County Snowmobile Association website.

The Rail Trail does not permit Side by Sides as per County of Haliburton by-law 3148.

Poster outlining the multiple use trail guidelines and trail courtesy.  Hikers should yield trial to equestrians and allow equestrians and bicyclists to pass.  ATVs must stay on the trail and yield to all non motorized traffic.  Bicyclists must ride on open trial only. Control your bicycle, always yield trail, never scare animals, plan ahead.  Equestrians must control your horse, avoid cross-county riding.  All users for your safety please observe the rules and regulations, stay on the designated trail be alert and courteous and avoid muddy areas.

Permits

You will need a special events permit if you are holding an event on the Haliburton County Rail Trail. Please see our Roads and Sign Permits page for more information.
