Source Water Protection
Municipal drinking water sources are protected by source protection plans under the Clean Water Act, 2006.
Source protection plans are developed by conservation authorities and are implemented by municipalities. The purpose of a source protection plan is to ensure that municipal drinking water sources (ground water wells or surface water sources like lakes or rivers) are protection from contamination.
The Trent Source Protection Plan is in effect for the drinking water systems in Minden Hills and Highlands East.
If your property is located within a source protection zone, there may be policies that limit certain contaminating uses on the site, or requirements that your septic system is regularly inspected. Haliburton County Official Plan Schedules (Schedule G Well Head Protection and Schedule J Surface Water) include the location of these zones for reference.
If you have questions about source water protection, please contact your local municipality for more information.
